In May 2008, the new Constitution of the Union Republic of Myanmar was adopted, with the implementation of the presidential system. In 2010 Myanmar carried out multi-party national elections under the new Constitution. On February 4, 2011, the Myanmar Congress elected Wu Dengsheng as Myanmar's first president. On March 15, 2016, the Myanmar Federal Assembly elected Wu Tingjue as Myanmar's first elected non-military president for more than half a century.

In 2005, the Government of Myanmar moved the capital from Yangon, the largest city, to Naypyidaw (formerly known as Pimana).
