On January 1, 2007 it officially joined the euro zone and on December 21, 2007 it officially joined the Schengen area in Europe.

On October 28, 2015, the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly re-elected members of the United Nations Human Rights Council, and Slovenia was successfully elected with a term from 2016 to 2018.
